Léo Therrien, Executive Director
Léo Therrien took the reins as founding Executive Director of Place des Arts du Grand Sudbury on May 15, 2019. His mission is to develop and manage the full potential of Northern Ontario’s first multidisciplinary arts centre – everything from the $30 million construction project to assembling an experienced team, the official opening in 2020-2021, and operating the centre.
Before joining Place des Arts, Mr. Therrien worked in international development and in Greater Sudbury’s health care system for more than 30 years, including almost 20 years as Executive Director of the Sudbury Hospice. He started his career with Development and Peace in the 1980s. In 1990, through his work in community networking, he created Village International Sudbury, an international development and resource centre.In the 2000s, he contributed to Maison La Paix’s expansion from an HIV/AIDS agency with four beds to a palliative care centre with 10 beds, soon to be 20 beds in 2020.
Mr. Therrien has a degree in Social Work from Laurentian University. He has been an active member of about 10 organizations and has received seven awards, including a Community Builders Award in the health care category in 2010, the Richelieu clubs’ Mérite Horace Viau in 2011, and the Senate Commemorative Medal marking the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017.
