Smooshes, Slabs & Slumps – Pamela Nelson

Through ceramic-based work, Pamela Nelson explores material transformation using process as both method and subject.
Grounded in the geological and industrial context of Sudbury, the work draws on the region’s deep history of mining and resource extraction—where rock is not only land, but commodity.
Nelson’s perspective is gouged out of the apocalyptic rocky landscape of her homeland, leading her to project her personal narrative onto the structure of sculptural materials and industrial processes transposed against geological time.

Pamela Nelson
Pamela Nelson is an interdisciplinary artist and designer originally from Sudbury, Ontario — a landscape defined by mining, smelting and exposed rock. First trained as an architect and holding an MFA from OCAD University, Nelson explores the intersection of geology and industry through experimental ceramics. Her sculptural works—formed by pressure, gravity, and time — capture the material’s mid-transformation, echoing the forces that shape both natural and built environments.
